They even suspended one monk on the tips of razor-sharp spears, held him up in the air for a few moments and with a shout, jerked the spears out from under him so that he fell flat on his face.

Without a second of hesitation, he bounced to his feet.  He wasn’t hurt a bit.  Not a ding, dent or scratch on him.  No blood, no bruising - nothing.

But nothing prepared me for what came next...

Suddenly, A nine year old boy ran out onto the stage, bowed to show his respect to the Head Abbot of the Shaolin Temple and then began a series of ancient Chinese deep breathing exercises.

Then, without warning, he shouted, dropped straight down as if he had been shot…and fell into a full split.

The crowd gasped in surprise; surely that had to hurt!  But the boy just sat there smiling, the calmest person in the stadium.

From there he began to move from position to position, stretch to stretch, each one more extreme than the next.  The final two positions brought tears to my eyes just to watch.

The first one saw the boy stand up straight on both legs and then slowly raise one leg up, up and up until he grabbed it with one of his hands and pulled on his leg - so that it was pointed straight up towards the ceiling - and his thigh was next to his head!

From there, the boy FELL OVER while still holding his leg – and to everyone’s astonishment - LANDED in a full split.

But he wasn’t done just yet.

To close his demonstration, the boy faced the crowd and lay down on his belly.  He propped his head in his hands as if he was watching television and smiled innocently at the crowd and then... slowly... he lifted his legs, arched his back and...

He curled his legs up and over his head, placing his feet next to his ears facing the crowd.  He had bent himself completely in half!

It almost didn’t look real.  I was speechless – my eyes bugging out of my head

The crowd sat in stunned silence.  For a moment, it was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop.  Then the crowd burst into applause and cheers for this amazing young boy.

I was so impressed with his remarkable skill and flexibility, I left that show determined to learn how the Shaolin Temple trained their Warrior Monks to be so flexible that they could do almost Super-human feats of strength and skill.

That was way back in 2003. 

More recently, I had the chance to workout with Ryan Lloyd, a fellow martial artist who had just returned from a six-week stay at the Shaolin Temple in Deng Feng, China.

He told me that when he first arrived at the Temple and began training, he was in decent shape, but it wasn’t until after he had gone through the routines that the Monks used to warm-up, stretch and strengthen the body did he notice any changes.

After the first couple of days, he woke up every morning bursting with energy.  Two hour long workout sessions passed with ease.  No muscle cramping or soreness.  And a nagging should injury that he showed up with vanished by the fourth day of following this routine.
